Indonesia lại tang thương vì sóng thần
Một trận sóng thần (tsunami) không được cảnh báo trước đã bất ngờ đổ vào vùng duyên hải bên Eo biển Sunda trên hai đảo Sumatra và Java (Indonesia) lúc khoảng 9g30 đêm thứ Bảy 22-12-2018. Theo số liệu cập nhật gần nửa đêm 24-12-2018 mà đài truyền hình Mỹ CNN trích dẫn, có ít nhất 373 người chết, hàng trăm người bị thương và hơn 20 người còn mất tích. Còn theo số liệu của báo Anh Daily Mail cập nhật lúc 10g sáng 24-12-2018, có 281 người được xác nhận đã chết, 56 người mất tích và ít nhất 1.016 người bị thương. Sóng thần đã phá hủy 500 ngôi nhà, 9 khách sạn và 350 chiếc tàu thuyền.
Những nhân chứng cho biết sóng thần cao tới 6 mét (20 feet) đã xóa sổ nhiều ngôi nhà trên bờ biển. Sóng thần này hình thành do sự hoạt động trở lại của núi lửa ngầm dưới biển Anak Krakatau gây ra những vụ trượt đất dưới đáy biển.
Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, người phát ngôn của Cục Giảm nhẹ Thiên tai Quốc gia (NDMA) Indonesia ngày 23-12-2018 cảnh báo có khả năng sẽ xảy ra thêm những vụ sóng thần nữa do núi lửa Anak Krakatau vẫn đang hoạt động. Trên mạng xã hội Twitter, ông Sutopo chia sẻ rằng: “Nạn phá hoại, ngân sách có hạn, hỏng hóc kỹ thuật đã khiến cho hệ thống phao cảnh báo sóng thần không đưa ra những tín hiệu báo động cho trận sóng thần này.” Hệ thống phao cảnh báo sóng thần này đã được Indonesia lắp đặt sau thảm họa sóng thần Ấn Độ Dương ngày 26-12-2004 giết chết ước tính khoảng 227.898 người ở 14 nước, trong đó nặng nhất là Indonesia với hon 200.000 người chết. Nhưng theo ông Sutopo, kể từ năm 2012, hệ thống này đã hoạt động không ổn định. Chính tình trạng không được cảnh báo sớm mà trận sóng thần tháng 10-2018 đã giết chết hơn 2.000 người ở vùng duyên hải phía tây của Sulawesi.
Sau vụ sóng thần ngày 22-12-2018, Tổng thống Joko Widodo đã ra lệnh cho Cục Khí tượng, Thời tiết và Địa chất (BMKG) của Indonesia mua các thiết bị dò tìm nhằm có thể cung cấp các cảnh báo sớm cho cộng đồng.
Indonesia nằm trên Vòng cung Núi lửa Thái Bình Dương (PacificRing of Fire), nơi tình trạng va chạm của các mảng kiến tạo (tectonic platescollide) thường xuyên gây ra động đất và núi lửa phun. Núi lửa ngầm Anak Krakatau nằm ở Eo biển Sunda giữa hai đảo Sumatra và Java. Nó là 1 trong 127 ngọn núi lửa còn hoạt động của Indonesia. Vụ phun lại hồi năm 1883 của nó được coi là một trong những vụ phun núi lửa chết chóc nhất trong lịch sử Indonesia, giết chết hơn 36.000 người.
